SPL to set up TV channel

Tagged in &

The 12 clubs of the Scottish Premier League (SPL) have voted unanimously to establish their own TV channel when the SPL's media deal with BSkyB expires in July.

"The concept of a channel dedicated to Scotland's most popular sporting competition is one we have been working on for a considerable time," said Roger Mitchell, chief executive of the SPL. "We are now actively involved in the tender process for the programming and production."

The SPL felt it was not receiving enough money from BSkyB - the latter paid £45million ($65m/EUR73m) for the TV rights in 1998, over half the amount paid to the English Premier League for their TV rights last year.

The news is a wake up call for BSkyB, Andrew Lee, a sports and media analyst at investment bank Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, told sportbusiness.com
