BBC launches dedicated websites

UK public broadcaster the BBC is launching dedicated sports websites to complement its portfolio of TV rights including its major football, rugby, tennis and cricket tournaments.

The service has launched with www.bbc.co.uk/tennis covering the Australian Open tennis tournament. Content will be available online beyond the conclusion of the two-week event.

A football section dedicated to the African Nations Cup (www.bbc.co.uk/africancup), which begins at the weekend, has also been set up with content including live audio webcasts of World Service radio commentaries.

Other football sites include an F.A. Cup section (www.bbc.co.uk/facup) with a competition that offers the chance to win tickets to the final. Punters have to answer FA Cup-related questions to receive points, and the highest scorers are entered into the prize draw.

BBC online cricket (www.bbc.co.uk/cricket ) is also boosted this weekend, with full coverage of the first one-day international in India, as well as ball-by-ball score tracking. From February 8, the England cricket team’s tour of New Zealand will be covered and there will be a live audio webcast of Test Match Special (www.bbc.co.uk/tms).

Coverage of the Six Nations rugby union tournament (www.bbc.co.uk/sixnations) goes live on January 23.
