Sky Sports is 'abusing its dominant position'

BSkyB has been accused by the pub industry of abusing its leading position as the UK's largest pay-TV operator in the television sports market.

A group of pub operators, including Six Continents, have complained to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) about the 50 percent annual increase in their monthly subscription fee for Sky Sports channels.

About 40 percent of the UK's 90,000 pubs and clubs subscribe to a premium sports service, generating GBP150m (USD217m/EUR242m) in annual revenue for BSkyB.

If the OFT rules in the pub industry's favour, BSkyB could face a fine of up to 10 perent of its annual turnover.

BSkyB shares dropped five percent today after Deutsche Bank announced it was putting an eight percent stake in the company on the market.
