The Scottish bid team, which is run by the Scottish Executive, the Scottish Football Association and UK Sport, will have to inform European soccer's ruling body UEFA of its intention to make a bid early next year.
The news comes just weeks before UEFA announces its formal criteria for hosting the tournament.
The Scottish Executive has already helped to pay for a feasibility study into major ground reconstruction, with the Dundee clubs expected to benefit from a £35million ($51m/B57m) shared ground, a new £30m ($43m/B49m) stadium for Aberdeen, and Hibernian’s East Stand would be redeveloped at a cost of £13m ($19m/B21m) should Scotland’s bid to host the championships be accepted.
Added to the list of suitable stadiums are Hampden Park, Murrayfield, Celtic Park and the Ibrox Stadium, giving Scotland a total of seven suitable venues, at least one away from the expected minimum required by UEFA.
There have been reports that Scotland will overcome its shortage of stadiums by making a joint bid for the tournament with the Republic of Ireland.
