2002 World cup security review brought forward

Soccer's governing body FIFA plan to bring forward by two months a security workshop for the 2002 World Cup finals, staging it in December to tackle fears raised by September's attacks on the United States.

"We do not expect football and the FIFA World Cup to be the target of terrorists but nevertheless we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of players, fans and officials at the World Cup," FIFA General Secretary Michel Zen-Ruffinen said in a statement. "No one should have any worries about going to Korea and Japan," he added.
Zen-Ruffinen said FIFA would stage a workshop for security officers from tournament co-hosts South Korea and Japan immediately after the December 1 draw.
Following the seminar, there will be weekly meetings to discuss and review security arrangements for the event.
