The paper, citing baseball sources it did not name, said the buyer or buyers will pay about $150 million (B171m) for the team and will continue to pursue a new stadium that could ensure the franchise's viability in south Florida.
Major League Baseball owners voted on November 6 to contract from 30 to 28 teams. Although teams to be folded were not named, the most likely candidates are the Montreal Expos, Minnesota Twins, Florida and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
The sources told the Sun-Sentinel that the sale is unrelated to the plans to contract and that the buyer has expressed no intention of moving the team out of south Florida.
The new owner would replace John Henry and would be the third for the Marlins in nine seasons.
Henry bought the team in 1999 for $150m (B171m) from H. Wayne Huizenga.
The owner of Florida Marlins baseball team has agreed to sell the club to an undisclosed buyer who will keep it in south Florida, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper has reported.
