Spanish clubs 'facing bankruptcy' over tax debts

Spanish Primera and Segunda Liga clubs owe the Spanish tax authorities ESP35bn ($180m/B

Some of the Primera Liga’s 20 clubs, which recorded an aggregate debt of ESP155bn ($820m/B930m) in the 1999/2000 season, could face bankruptcy if the clubs are forced to register the debt in this year’s annual accounts.

However, the Primera Liga is questioning the authorities’ assessment of the money owed and has stated that only 10 percent of the money is due.

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are exempt from the threat of bankruptcy because they are members clubs and not limited companies.
