He joined a number of leading statesmen to support the bid, including former US Secretary of State James Baker, and US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson.
The United States Olympic Committee announced recently Houston was one of four US cities to make it to the next phase of the candidature process.
"I am pleased Houston will be in contention for the 2012 Olympic bid. Without question Houston would do an outstanding job on the Olympics. This is a great sports town and we hope the Olympics come here," said former President Bush.
The city is likely to find New York its toughest opponent .
