Cardinals new stadium declared too hazardous

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has declared that the Tempe stadium for the American football team, the Arizona Cardinals, is a hazard to aircraft.

Although the FAA decision carries no legal authority to block the construction of the $344million (B391m) project, the state Tourism and Sports Authority is expected to withdraw the site and select a new one by the end of the calendar year.

Federal investigators concluded that the stadium is too tall and too close to Sky Harbor International Airport, and would create significant safety risks for pilots reacting to the loss of engine power on take-off.
