England’s arch-rival’s game was broadcast live on the national free-to-air channel, with station bosses claiming more than seven million soccer fans tuned in over the 90 minutes to follow the action.
Figures showed the game achieved a reach of 7.1m viewers over the 90 minutes - the figure shows how many viewers tuned in at some time throughout the match.
However, coverage peaked at 1.7m at 8pm with a seven percent share and averaged 1.3m for the whole game with a six percent share.
Robert Charles, controller of sport for C5, said: "As we thought, there was clearly a huge interest from UK viewers in how the Germans would get on.
“The figure is even more remarkable considering the tie was effectively over at 3-0 after the first quarter of an hour."
