BEIJING APPOINTS OLYMPIC BID COMMITTEE

China has set up a 76-member committee to organise Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Bid Committee is headed by Beijing Mayor Liu Qi.
China had been reluctant to consider another attempt to host the Olympics after Beijing lost out to Sydney for the 2000 Games, its bid beset by controversy over China's human rights record and Beijing's serious air pollution.
But Beijing submitted an application for the 2008 Games in April.
It will face competition from Paris, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Kuala Lumpur, Cairo, Istanbul, Osaka and Seville. The host will be announced after an International Olympic Committee (IOC) meets in June 2001.
