Fyodorov, who vowed to fight corruption and keep a close watch over the BSF's finances when he was elected to his post 17 months ago, filed a libel case against the sports daily Pressbol claiming damages of 65 billion Belarussian roubles ($185,000).
The 48-year-old retired major-general said the newspaper had damaged his reputation by publishing libellous material about the federation and himself.
Pressbol's deputy editor Sergei Novikov questioned the BSF's decision to bring the case to court. He said the damages sought were unprecedented in a country where the average salary was equivalent to less than $50 per month.
