PLAYERS FACE EURO TAX HIT

Most players in this year's Euro 2000 tournament will have to pay 18 percent of their earnings in tax, tournament officials have announced.

The rate was announced after a meeting between organisers from co-hosts the Netherlands and Belgium and UEFA officials in Amsterdam.
The only exceptions will be for players based in Germany and Switzerland playing in the Netherlands and those based in Germany, France or Greece playing in Belgium because of tax treaties between those countries.
When the championship was last held, in England in 1996, players' earnings were exempt from tax, although those playing in the World Cups of 1994 in the United States and France in 1998 did have to pay up.
