FRUIT OF THE LOOM TO CLOSE DOWN PRO PLAYER FACTORY

Fruit of the Loom is to close its Frankfort, Kentucky, screen-printing and embroidery factory, as part of the Bankruptcy Court-approved wind down of its Sports & Licensing Division.

The FTL Sports & Licensing Division, often referred to as Pro Player, consists primarily of FTL's subsidiaries, Salem Sportswear, Inc. and Pro Player, Inc.

Approximately 180 workers at Salem Sportswear's headquarters in Hudson, New Hampshire, will be made redundant. In addition, approximately 20 employees in New York City and Canada have been affected.

FTL and its U.S. subsidiaries, including Pro Player, filed voluntary petitions with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in December 1999. After trying unsuccessfully to sell Pro Player for several months, FTL obtained Bankruptcy Court approval in February to wind down Pro Player operations and sell off its assets.

As a leading supplier of licensed apparel bearing the trademarks and logos of professional sports and collegiate teams, Pro Player had 1999 revenues of about $130 million.

Pro Player holds licenses with the National Hockey League, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, Wilson Sporting Goods Co. and numerous colleges and universities.
