UK GOVERNMENT DENY JOINT WORLD CUP BID REPORT

The British government has dismissed a report that England might team up with Germany in a bid to host soccer's 2006 World Cup rather than press its own case.

The Independent newspaper reported that the plan for England to join one of its oldest and fiercest sporting opponents was essential to head off a strong challenge by South Africa to stage the tournament.
But a spokesman for the UK government?s Department of Culture, Media and Sport said the story was "total and complete rubbish".
"England's bid for the 2006 World Cup is a great bid and we hope and expect it will be successful," he said.
The Independent quoted a source close to Culture Secretary Chris Smith as saying a joint bid was being "seriously considered".
It said England and Germany were in danger of splitting the pro-European vote on the executive of world soccer's ruling body FIFA. Brazil and Morocco are also bidding to host the tournament.
"Perhaps it would be a good idea for both countries to be forced to bury their hatchets," the paper quoted the source as saying.
