AUSTRALIA CUTS ELITE SPORTS FUNDS

Australian elite sport groups are facing a $A15 million funding cut in April 2000. It is thought likely that the cuts will be handed down in the May Budget.

Sports that attracted funding to maximise Australia's medal chances in the Sydney Olympics are expected to lose out in favour of more populist sports like Australian Rules Football, rugby union and netball.
Extra funding is expected to be given to the Australian Sports Commission to minimise the effect of budget cuts, but the Australian Olympic Committee has been lobbying to retain funding levels.
