US COMMISSIONERS MEET FOR INTERNET DISCUSSIONS

The Commissioners of the four major US sports have met in New York to discuss the role of new technology in sports? future. David Stern of the National Basketball Association, Paul Tagliabue of the National Football League, Gary Bettman of the National Hockey League, and Bud Selig, head of Major League Baseball discussed the need for additional online sports content, web video, and a significant increase in internet interactivity with fans. In addition, the commissioners expanded on the revenue stream potential of the internet.

Foxsports quoted Stern as saying that, ?As the number of Internet users around the world increases, sports fans will have more opportunities to conduct sports-related business, like ticket purchasing, ticket trades and interaction with players and other fans worldwide.?
The sports moguls noted that the Web opens the door to expanding the sports fan base as well. The technological advancements apply to traditional television through the use of HDTV and WebTV that allow fans on screen access to statistics, historical data and a variety of camera angles.
Last week IOC President, Juan Antonio Samaranch, called for an even more extensive meeting of federation chiefs and technology experts in Lausanne in order to clarify issues thrown up by the internet revolution.
