NEW WEMBLEY FINALLY GETS GO-AHEAD

The reconstruction of Wembley Stadium, the centrepiece of England's 2006 World Cup bid, has been given the green light, according to UK media reports.

The #475 million ($699.6million) plan was approved by the local Brent council and now needs only official backing when the council's planning sub-committee meets next week.
The stadium had faced delay because its owners and the council could not agree about who should pay the #30 million ($44.19 million) for improved transport links.
But following discussions between Wembley chiefs, Brent and new London mayor Ken Livingstone, extra government money was found.
Any delay in Brent's approval would have been harmful to England's 2006 bid.
FIFA, world soccer's governing body, decide on July 6 in Zurich which country should host the finals. England are bidding along with Brazil, Germany, Morocco and South Africa.
The last match due to be played at the present stadium, which was built in 1923 and seats 80,000, is September's World Cup qualifier between England and Germany.
