ENGLAND KIT SALES BOOST JJB SPORTS

England?s Euro 2000 campaign may have been marked by disappointment on the field and shame off it, but this hasn?t stopped sales of replica England shirts from adding to the quarterly profits of the nation?s largest sports retailer.

Sales of England shirts helped to boost first-quarter sales at JJB Sports, with the group reporting like-for-like sales ahead 12 per cent in the past 13 weeks and a rise of 17 per cent in total turnover for the first 21 weeks of the current year.

Finance director, David Greenwood, said the group was looking forward to a continued strong performance, helped by Wimbledon fortnight and the onset of the football season in autumn.

This will come as welcome news for JJB the founder and executive chairman Dave Whelen who controls more than 40 per cent of the stock. Whelen is selling 4.5m shares to repay borrowings incurred for the building of the JJB stadium for Wigan's football and rugby league clubs.
