GERMANY & ENGLAND CELEBRATE CART DEALS

In twin announcements in London and Berlin, officials of the CART FedEx Championship Series announced the debut of Champ Cars on ovals in Britain and Germany in September 2001.

The first race, the German 500, will take place September 15 at the 2.0-mile oval 125 km south of Berlin which has been renamed the Eurospeedway Berlin Brandenberg.
On the following Saturday, September 22, the champ cars, whose predecessors raced at the Brands Hatch road circuit in the late 1970s, will run at the 1.5-mile Rockingham oval at Corby in Northamptonshire.
"We are delighted to include Rockingham, England, as a part of the newly expanded calendar for the 2001 FedEx Championship Series," said Bobby Rahal, interim President and CEO of Championship Auto Racing Teams, Inc.
"We are well aware of the huge following our sport has, particularly in the United Kingdom, both on TV and with British fans visiting our events in the USA. We're now looking forward to bringing the world's fastest form of circuit racing to Rockingham."
Champ cars, although primarily based in the United States, also run in Canada, Australia, Japan, and will make their debut in Mexico next year. Star drivers such as Jacques Villeneuve have run in CART and gone on to race in Formula One, and Formula One drivers, such as world champion Nigel Mansell, have gone from Formula One to race in CART.
