CANADA CONSIDERING 2010 WORLD CUP BID

Canada said it might submit a bid to host the 2010 World Cup as a way of sending a message to the world that it was serious about one day hosting the world's premier soccer tournament.

"We've looked into the possibility of making a bid for the 2010 World Cup even though we know South Africa is the front runner," Canadian Soccer Association said spokesman Morgan Quarry.
"This is more of an idea to put the wheels in motion to potentially host the World Cup some time in the future."
Quarry admitted that Canada did not have adequate facilities to host a World Cup. The national team can only play at four stadiums in the country and the quality of the pitches there is not up to World Cup standards.
"We have a lot of hurdles. Stadiums are probably our biggest weakness. We don't have the facilities but we wouldn't put in a bid unless we thought we could do it," said Quarry.
There are around 700,000 young soccer players in Canada but the sport is still a minor one in a country dominated by ice hockey, baseball, Canadian football and basketball.
Canada has only qualified for the World Cup once, when it reached the 1986 finals in Mexico but the team lost all three matches against France (0-1), Hungary (0-2) and the Soviet Union (0-2) and was eliminated without scoring a goal or securing a point.
