The IOC mission was led by Robin Mitchell, IOC member in Fiji, and secretary general of the Oceania Olympic Committees.
Mitchell said that the IOC would continue to assist East Timor to develop sport and help re-build sport infrastructure in the country.
"The mission was impressed with the progress made in sport in East Timor over the past six months and in particular with the impact that East Timor's participation in the Olympic Games in Sydney had on the development of the country," the IOC said in a statement.
A team of four East Timorese athletes took part in the Sydney Games' opening ceremony, entering the stadium just ahead of the host nation and marching under the Olympic flag.
They competed as independent athletes at the Games.
East Timor, a former Portuguese colony, was invaded by Indonesia in 1975. It was left in ruins by pro-Indonesian militias after voting for independence in August 1999.
