BRITISH HORSE TRIALS ASSOCIATION LOSING $144,000 A MONTH

The British Horse Trials Association, the promoters and organisers of show jumping, dressage and cross-country events, is losing about #100,000 ($144,000) a month because of the foot and mouth crisis.

The organisation, which has up to 7,000 members, has already had to cancel over 60 events since the outbreak of the disease and a further 58 events have been cancelled for May and June. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Maff) is allowing only 15 events to take place between May 18 and June 24.
Winnie Murphy, spokeswoman for The British Horse Trials Association, said: ?The whole equestrian industry is losing about #29m ($43m) a week at the moment and it looks as though most of our events in July and August are going to be cancelled too. Even the events which are taking place are going to have to be stringently organised or Maff will be forced to cancel them too.?
