NO DECISION ON SOLE AFRICAN 2006 BID

Plans to cut the number of African countries bidding for the 2006 World Cup from five to just one strong candidate have been delayed, officials said on Tuesday.

A meeting of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee discussed ways to persuade the five African bidding countries - Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa - to unite behind a single candidate but did not reach any conclusion, secretary-general Mustapha Fahmy said.

Fahmy said an approach by CAF was still being worked out and no decision would be taken yet.

England, Germany and Brazil are also bidding.

Further discussions are expected on Wednesday when CAF hold a joint meeting with their European counterparts UEFA. They are also in Cape Town as part of the Meridian project, a co-operation agreement between the two continent's soccer bodies.

UEFA and CAF are also expected to discuss FIFA president Sepp Blatter's proposal for a biennial World Cup.
