SCHROEDER PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR GERMAN WORLD CUP BID

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has promised his government would do all it could to support Germany's bid for the 2006 World Cup.

Schroeder, who took office last month, also said his government stood by a pledge from the previous administration to provide funds to modernise stadiums in Berlin and Leipzig.

"Both cities must be venues for the 2006 World Cup," the chancellor said in a statement after a meeting with German Soccer Federation President Egidius Braun in Bonn.

Germany faces stiff competition to host the tournament. England, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Morocco and Egypt have all said they plan to make bids.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said an African country would be the logical choice to host the tournament, as long as it could meet strict guidelines on issues such as infrastructure, security and facilities.

Schroeder, a powerful striker with his local soccer team in his younger days, said would be happy to help out with ideas to help make Germany's bid a success.

"I hope I can be there in 2006, and in the same job I'm in now," he grinned to reporters as he welcomed Braun.
