ICE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HOST DILEMMA

Norway?s bid to stage this year?s ice hockey world championships could be scuppered by a new anti-alcohol sponsorship law.

The event, which is due to take place in two weeks, may fall foul of strict Norwegian alcohol-advertisement rules which, since the beginning of this year, is prohibited in the country unless granted an exemption by the Government.

Borre Ragnlien, chairman of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, said: There is a grave risk that well lose the championships. But, of course, we put faith into the Norwegian Government and hope that we will be granted an exemption from the current rules.

One of the main stumbling blocks is that the main sponsor of the world championships is the German beer company Warsteiner.

For the firm, which has ploughed millions of pounds into the event, to see its brand-name associated with the event on helmets, shirts, hoardings and other associated items, it must now hope for Government intervention.

If it fails, all talk is that the International Ice Hockey Federation will move the championships elsewhere.

Both the Swedish and Finnish ice hockey associations have expressed an interest in stepping in and hosting the event.

Sweden last staged the championships in 1995 - making a net profit of $6.25 million.
