IRANIAN WOMEN SOON TO PLAY SOCCER, OFFICIALS SAY

Iranian women will soon be able to play football, one of the Islamic republic's most prominent sports officials has said.

But, their indoor matches will take place far from the gaze of men in accordance with religious rules observed in Iran, where sports facilities are strictly segregated between the sexes.
Faezeh Hashemi, deputy chairman of Iran's National Olympic Committee, said that from a scientific point of view playing soccer did not create any problem for women.
"Given the widespread enthusiasm shown by girls in towns and even in rural areas to play football and the affirmative view of some Islamic jurists, women will soon find it possible to play football," newspapers have quoted her as saying.
Hashemi, a daughter of former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, said the country's physical education organisation was already training women referees and coaches.
Indoor matches for women would begin soon, she said.
Conservative Islamists have objected to women playing soccer and taking part in other physical activities such as cycling.
The country's top sports official, Vice-President Mostafa Hashemi-Taba, was summoned before parliament last month by conservative deputies who quizzed him over women's soccer and plans to rescind a ban on women attending men's soccer matches.
Women in Iran are allowed to take part in several sports, including basketball, karate, riding, rowing, shooting, skiing, swimming and volleyball which allow them to participate either while conforming to the country's strict Islamic dress code or away from the gaze of men.
Few women's sports are broadcast on television.
