BBC wins rights to African Nations Cup

UK public broadcaster BBC has won the rights to screen the African Nations Cup football tournament, due to be held in Mali in January and February next year.

The corporation is expected to send 24 staff to cover the 16-country event.

The tournament is seen as being a useful way for the BBC's football production team to keep its hand in covering major matches following the loss of the English Premiership highlights to ITV.

A nightly 40-minute highlights package is planned for the opening rounds, while the semi-finals and final are expected to be shown live.
