Players vote for strike action

England’s professional footballers are likely to vote in favour of strike action in December, according to UK press reports.

The Professional Footballer’s Association ballot closes at midday tomorrow and PFA officials predict an “extremely positive” outcome to the vote, which was called in protest at the percentage of television revenues offered to the PFA by the leagues.

The PFA said that 2,500 ballot papers had been returned from the 4,000 sent to the PFA’s members. The strike would affect only games being covered by television.

If strike action is called - and a simple majority of votes is enough to carry the proposal - the PFA would have 28 days from the ballot to commence action.

However, should the player’s voting intentions go as expected, the Premier League could still call an injunction preventing a strike and take the dispute to the High Court.
