Blatter & Rogge stand firm on Euro laws

A top-level meeting between sport’s two most powerful figures has resulted in the strengthening of the agreement on the special legal status that sport should be afforded in European legislation.

Meeting yesterday for the first time since Jacques Rogge was elected president of the IOC, FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Rogge agreed to work together ahead of the planned reform of European treaties in 2004.

Discussions covered the organisation of competitions and preparations for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens - with Blatter expressing his concern about delays in the construction of competition venues.

The ongoing fight against doping was also a major topic during the meeting.

"I am satisfied with the progress made and the collaboration between the IOC and FIFA,” said Rogge. “I am eagerly looking forward to reaping the rewards of our excellent relations in the future."

The two organisations reaffirmed their efforts to combat doping and expressed their support and acknowledgement for the World Anti-Doping Agency.

They also stated unequivocally that the sporting movement, particularly international sports federations, must preserve its responsibilities and autonomy in this area.

"This first meeting took place in a most cordial and constructive atmosphere,” added Blatter. “My report to the FIFA Executive Committee will be very positive."
