SPL planning subscription TV channel

The Scottish Premier League (SPL) has confirmed that it is examining the option of launching its own subscription-based satellite channel featuring live match coverage.

Under the proposals being considered, the SPL's new venture would screen one live match a week with the channel available through satellite, digital and cable broadcasting platforms. Fans would pay a monthly subscription to access the service.

Stewart Thomson, marketing director for the SPL, commented: "We have to examine all possible ways to enhance revenue for our shareholders. One thing we are looking at is setting up a standalone TV channel. It would be owned by SPL and available through all broadcasting platforms."

No final decision will be made on the initiative until the SPL has consulted with its clubs further.

The governing body is also inviting broadcasters to bid for the TV rights to the league when the existing contract runs out at the end of the season. Any move by the SPL to set up its own channel would impact substantially on the bidding process, given that broadcasters' taking up the rights would not be given exclusivity of content.
