Nordic countries confirm Euro 2008 bid

The Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden have confirmed their intention to bid for the right to host the 2008 European Championships.

At a meeting of the Nordic Council in Copenhagen, the Prime Ministers of the five states came out in support of the idea.

Bids for the tournament must be submitted to UEFA by May 2002, and a decision will be made by December 2002.

The Nordic bid faces competition from Austria/Switzerland, Greece/Turkey, Hungary, Russia and Scotland.

If the Nordic countries are successful in their bid, only two of them would qualify as host countries, according to UEFA.
