Backing his appeal for Americans to live normally despite the September 11 attacks, Bush came to New York to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the 97th World Series after his government warned of possible new attacks in the next week.
The fans passed a series of police checkpoints, then went through airport-like metal detectors and, after emptying their pockets, were examined with metal detector rods.
Fans were given small American flags as they entered, but were not allowed to bring bags or containers, a rule introduced in all ballparks after the World Trade Center attacks.
The game started on time with a few patches of empty seats visible.
