Holyfield–Ruiz fight on the ropes

The heavyweight title clash between American Evander Holyfield and Puerto Rican John Ruiz will not take place in Beijing, and may not happen at all, according to a report in the Boston Globe which claimed promoter Don King is trying to reschedule the fight for December 15 at an alternative venue in the US.

Cable broadcaster HBO has agreed to pay $5million (B5.6m) for the rights to the fight and has asked King to relocate the duel, highlighting travel fears from the September 11 terrorist attacks in America.

King's partners in China allegedly did not meet a crucial financial deadline to deliver a letter of credit to King's bank by the end of Friday, apparently ending the likelihood of the fight being staged in Beijing on November 24.
The fight was postponed less than two weeks before its originally scheduled date of August 5 – a neck injury to Ruiz the official reason given.
