Gutnick to put 'money where mouth is'

Joseph Gutnick, former president of Australian Football League club Melbourne, has pledged to put his money where his mouth is in his bid to regain control of the club.

Gutnick has already donated A$2.7million ($1.3m/B1.54) to the Demons but said he did not want his election campaign to be based on how much money he gave.

"I have always said that I will put my money where my mouth is, but of course a lot depends on the success of my business activities," he said.

"I don't think anyone has any doubts that I will continue to give, but I don't want to get back to the club by money."

Gutnick said he welcomed the decisions of vice-presidents Bill Guest and Ian Johnson, who announced on Monday they would not seek re-election.

Directors Stuart Spencer and Anthony Rodbard-Bean will also not stand at the December 18 elections.

Gutnick said Guest and Johnson should have resigned six months ago when he asked them to step aside, along with Alan Stockdale.

He said he agreed with former Melbourne captain Robert Flower, who is heading a ticket opposed to Gutnick, that Guest and Johnson weren't an advantage to the club. Gutnick said he would continue to push for a board that represented all the sections of the club.
