The same kind of air cover that is currently available over Washington will be employed during the games and 2,000 members of the Utah Army National Guard will be called up.

A no-fly zone above the 52,000-seat Rice-Eccles stadium is likely to grow from "tens of miles to hundreds of miles", for the opening and closing ceremonies, according to Mike Leavitt, Utah governor. It is yet to be decided whether television networks will be exempt from the no-fly areas.

More fencing and metal detectors will be erected at new sites including the International Olympic Committee's hotel, the state Capital, the Salt Lake City and County Building and the historic Main Street area of Park City. Visitors will also be prevented from bringing backpacks or bottles to the games.
