PR 'the key' to 2010 Ryder Cup bid success

Wales’ successful bid for the 2010 Ryder Cup had much to do with the successful public relations campaign, according to Terry Matthews, owner of the £100m ($144m/B

“Public relations played a very important role as part of our efforts to win the Ryder Cup bid. Well thought out PR made it possible to gain crucial support from the golfing world for a Wales win,” he said.

London-based agency S2 was singled out for its involvement in the bid which saw it take responsibility for co-ordinating the PR strategy for it as well as running the press office throughout Europe.

Anabel Sexton, managing director of S2 said: "I am delighted that S2 were able to play a part in Team Wales – to have been involved with the bid from the very beginning to its successful conclusion has been a thrilling experience. It was an honour to be given the opportunity to use our unique sporting PR expertise to help Wales win the ultimate golfing accolade – the right to host a Ryder Cup.”

Meanwhile, Ryder Cup Ltd said yesterday that all official hospitality clients with bookings for the postponed 2001 Ryder Cup matches would be able to transfer their packages at no additional costs for when Europe and the US meet at The Belfry on September 27-29, 2002.
