Seven pays ten-times more for Socceroos

Australia's Seven Network has paid an incredible ten-times more than any local network has ever paid to screen a one-off soccer match by the national team, the Socceroos.

Seven is believed to have paid A$500,000 (US$256,450, B284,236) for the live-broadcast rights to the Socceroos' upcoming World Cup qualifier in South America.
A Seven spokeswoman refused to comment on how much the network had paid, only saying it was "confident we have not paid too much".

And she said Seven would broadcast the game live on free-to-air television rather than its C7 pay-TV arm.

The game, against the fifth-ranked team from the South American qualification group, probably Uruguay, will be played late November.

The South American game will be the second in the series, with the first to be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Seven also has the rights to broadcast that game.

The network has dramatically increased its coverage of local soccer since losing the rights to Australian Football League matches to News Ltd consortium.

It has started a weekend magazine-style show, and is showing delayed telecasts of Friday night games.

Seven hopes to recoup the cost of the World Cup games by offering advertisers packages that take in not only these games but local matches as well.
