Marathon record boosts Japanese TV

Over 55 million television viewers in Japan tuned in to watch national hero Naoko Takahashi break the women's marathon world record.

The figures, released by host broadcaster Fuji TV, show that when the race finished, 53.5 percent of the Japanese television watching public saw Takahashi shave 57 seconds off the previous record with a time of 2 hours 19 minutes and 46 seconds.
The race was held in Berlin which is seven hours behind Tokyo with Takahashi crossing the finish line at 6.20pm, Japanese time.
