Former Italian soccer giants Sampdoria (pictured winning the Copa Italia in 1994) could be sold to a consortium led by the head of one of Italy’s biggest oil companies.

The club – former champions of Serie A – have slumped in recent years and this season are in their third season in Serie B.
Now club owner Enrico Mantoyani is locked in negotiations over a possible sale with a consortium headed by Ricardo Garrone, head of oil firm ERF.
"If this deal is completed this will be the solution that I have dreamed of and which will bring a smile to Sampdoria," said Mantoyani, majority shareholder and son of former owner Paolo Mantoyani who led the team to championship glory in 1991.
