Spanish sport gets cash boost

Spanish sport will receive Pts24.2bn ($132.7m/B

The figure represents an increase of 8.11 percent over 2001 – the biggest ever hike in government funding.

The Consejo Superior de Deportes will deliver Pts10.052bn ($55.1m/B60.4m) to the federations and elite competitions of which Pts372m ($2m/B2.24m) is earmarked for women's sport, an increase of 4.11 percent over the current year.

Sports facilities will receive Pts1.9bn ($10.3m/B11.4m) for renovations. The centres for high performance sport in Madrid and Sierra Nevada will be extended and a new hall of residence will be built in the capital.

More than Pts1bn ($5.4m/B6m) goes to the town council of Almeria towards the cost of building a stadium to host the 2005 Mediterranean Games while school and university sport will receive Pts1.5bn ($8.1m/B8.87m), 7.7 percent more than in 2001.
