ARU questions secrecy in World Cup planning

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has questioned whether a rival nation is leaking confidential planning information for the 2003 World Cup.

While the ARU refused to name a suspect, the finger has been firmly pointed at the New Zealand Rugby Football Union (NZRFU), which could face an investigation by the International Rugby Board (IRB).

An NZRFU member has allegedly leaked a draft copy of the controversial draw, which should be finalised within one month.

The alleged draft schedule was printed in a UK newspaper last weekend, quoting the anonymous NZ official who was critical of Australia as the host nation.

The IRB has reportedly traced the leak to New Zealand, with talk it will consider charging any culprits with bringing the game into disrepute.
The ARU has dismissed the draft copy as incorrect but it remained unhappy that rival officials would try to undermine planning for rugby's showcase tournament.

"The ARU shares the IRB's concerns over the continued speculation surrounding the World Cup schedule and the continued confidentiality of tournament details," an ARU spokesman told Australia's Sydney Morning Herald.

"We are told the IRB has evidence linking it to New Zealand but we have no indications ourselves about where the information may have come from."

The NZRFU is only a sub-host, with Australia winning sole hosting rights as far back as January 1998. The pool matches will be split evenly between Australia and New Zealand but some NZRFU officials are reportedly unhappy at draft copies of the draw which have England playing in Australia.
