Wembley Stadium hangs on

Wembley and Birmingham are the last two contenders to become the official site for a new national stadium in the UK, according to a government report to be released in the next few days.

The study, which has been written by Patrick Carter, has apparently vetoed all other bids which included one from Coventry.

Culture secretary Tessa Jowell will now have to speak with the FA and decide to rebuild Wembley in London or go-ahead with building a new stadium in the West Midlands. The FA, which owns the land around Wembley, has spoken of its support for having the national stadium at Wembley and has gained the support of London’s mayor Ken Livingstone.

But Birmingham is apparently the people’s favourite as it is so centrally located in the UK and does not suffer the same congestion problems as the capital. For security reasons, Birmingham may also emerge as a more preferable location in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in the US.
