It revealed it would postpone this weekend’s racing events at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon and Texas Motor Speedway outside Fort Worth.
The Winston Cup New Hampshire 300 will now become the season finale, scheduled for Friday, November 23.
The Craftsman Truck Series Silverado 350 in Texas will be held Friday, October 5.
“It is time for families to come together,” NASCAR president Mike Helton said. “We felt that postponing this weekend’s races was simply the right thing to do. We join the nation in mourning those who lost their lives and we pray those wounded recover fully.”
All New Hampshire 300 tickets will be honoured for the November event, Bahre said.
While it has altered its racing schedule previously because of snow, rain and 1998’s summer wildfires in the Daytona Beach area, NASCAR has never in its 53-year history changed a scheduled event for anything other than a natural phenomenon.
Meanwhile, NASCAR rival discipline CART insists its race in Germany – the first of its kind in Europe – will still take place.
CART CEO Joseph Heitzler called an impromptu meeting with all 1500 workers involved in the race at Germany’s EuroSpeedway to reassure them.
"Like our government leaders, we believe it is important for all of us to begin moving back to a normal course and we hope our race here on Saturday will help Americans and people throughout the world to do just that, while memorialising the victims from the tragedy that occurred in the United States on Tuesday," Heitzler said. "CART and EuroSpeedway officials have redirected the celebratory events planned for the inaugural running of the German 500 to focus on remembering those victims.
"We will be racing with a great sense of sadness and compassion, but also with a great deal of respect as we remember those affected by this tragedy."
Meanwhile, major tennis and golf events in the US have also been put on hold because of the tragic events, while the NHL has cancelled pre-season games this weekend.
NASCAR has followed the lead of the NFL and Major League Baseball, by postponing its activities this weekend, in the light of the tragedy in the US early this week.
