Rangers' terrorist fears rejected

Glasgow Rangers’ appeal against playing its Uefa Cup tie in Dagestan has been rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Uefa insisted that the soccer club fly to the Russian province to play Anzhi Makhachkala despite advice from the Foreign Office warning the club not to go. Rangers refused to play because of safety concerns for the squad in the terrorist-ridden region and appealed against the decision.

But despite terrorist attacks yesterday in New York and Washington, the appeal has gone against the and they now face expulsion from the competition and a lengthy ban if they fail to play the match.

A CAS statement said: “By decision rendered this night by the deputy president of the CAS ordinary arbitrary division, the application by Rangers FC has been dismissed.”
