England to bid for 2007 Rugby World Cup

Francis Baron, secretary of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), has confirmed they will bid to host the 2007 World Cup tournament which will put England in direct competition with France.

Baron confirmed that England would go-it-alone to host the games rather than sharing it with its European counterparts. “We are quite happy to stage it on our own. We have all the resources to do a very good job,” he said.
But he is going to wait for the tender document to come out on October 31 before formulating his final plans.

But England will co-operate with France to negotiate a new Six Nations Championships television deal which will take effect from the start of the 2002-3 season. The countries will come together on Friday to begin to formulate a strategy.

“The critical thing is we agree the format of the tender which will go out to the market place,” said Baron. “We have to agree the right tender so we get the best coverage for Six Nations rugby and the best financial returns we can. I am sure we will come to a sensible agreement.”
