Sportsetail wins World Cup merchandising deal

Sportsetail, the merchandising business owned as a joint venture by the UK’s Hay & Robertson and BSkyB, has reached a European product and distribution agreement with FIFA for the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan.

The deal was secured through FIFA World Cup’s exclusive licensing agent (excluding Japan), Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG), and gives Sportsetail, which has plans to float later this year, the right to design, develop, source and market a range of products.

These will include children’s and adult’s clothing, nightwear and headwear, bearing logo’s, images, trademarks and mascots of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

The agreement allows for the sale and distribution of World Cup products through traditional retail outlets in all UEFA confederation member countries including England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland.

The company will also publish the “Official 2002 FIFA World Cup” direct mail catalogue and develop a network of freestanding World Cup retail outlets in airports and shopping malls, offering a range of official licensed products.

Said Lance Yates, chief executive of Hay & Robertson plc and Sportsetail: “We expect this important agreement to be the first of many with CPLG, who represent such a strong portfolio of sports and entertainment rights and consider the relationship with FIFA central to our strategy of developing a significant merchandising business within the world of football”.
