English soccer dismisses 'British Cup'

England’s Football League has dismissed proposals for a British Cup as "largely unworkable".

Stewart Milne, chairman of Scottish Premier League (SPL) club Aberdeen, believes that the English and Scottish League Cups could be combined in the future.
And SPL chief executive Roger Mitchell also believes a British League to feed the English Premiership is another possible way forward.
But Football League spokesman John Nagle insists that plans for a competition akin to the old Anglo-Scottish Cup would founder.
"While the Football League is always open to suggestions, a British Cup is unlikely. The League Cup is the jewel in our crown," said Nagle.
"Next season it will be worth £80 million in television and attendance money and therefore it is the most important competition in terms of redistribution and link-up through the game in England.”
