Macedonian soccer league streamlined

Macedonia's premier league will be reduced from 14 teams to 12 next season in an attempt to improve the country's soccer, a national football union official said on Thursday.

"From the 2001-2002 season there will be 12 teams in the top division," said the union's competitions manager Aleksandar Dubrovski.
The change aims to intensify the national championship which will have 33 rounds instead of 26 the previous season.
"Thus we will be in line with [European soccer’s ruling body] UEFA regulations requiring at least 28 rounds," he added.
The championship will start on August 12 and matches will be played almost every Wednesday and Sunday. The three-month winter break of previous championships is expected to be cut by at least a month.
Two teams will be relegated to, and two promoted from, the second division.
Macedonian Cup first-round matches will be played on August 5.
