While still falling short of the 1999/2000 high of 895, a market aberration experienced at the peak of the recruitment drive for the Sydney 2000 Olympic & Paralympic Games, the strength of the sport employment market signals continuing good news for the sport management sector.

The total number of positions advertised in the 2000/2001 year, excluding the 2000 Sydney Olympic & Paralympic Games was 603 compared to 464 in 1999/2000.
The total number of positions advertised in the 2000/2001 year, including the 2000 Sydney Olympic & Paralympic Games was 608 compared to 895 in 1999/2000.
The total number of positions advertised in the period January – June, 2001 was 345 compared to 262 for January – June, 2000 (not including the 2000 Sydney Olympic & Paralympic Games).
Opportunities with Government funded Institutes and Academies of Sport continued to grow, up from 16 in 1999/00 to an impressive 53 in 2000/01.
Sports Marketing Agencies (29) and Event Management Companies (20) emerged as strong market leaders.
Government agencies including Local (40), Federal (38) and State (26) continue to play an important employment role in the sector.
University Sport (28), Swimming (22), Racing (21), Golf (19), Rugby Union (18), Surf Sports (17), Cricket (14) and Disability Sport (14) lead the way for mainstream sport organisations, while Rugby League, with 7 positions, experienced the largest contraction, (down from 19 jobs in 1999/00).
Vocational opportunities in the area of Administrative Support more than doubled over the period, up from 40 positions in 1999/00 to 94 in 2000/01. Sales & Marketing (69), Coaching (62), Recreation Management (53) and Development (40) positions were strong, while opportunities for Chief Executives (80) grew from the 1999/00 high of 64.
Major events, including the Goodwill Games (16), 2006 Commonwealth Games (3) and 2002 Gay Games (2) continue to have some market effect and are likely to grow closer to event staging.
Specialty areas including IT (6), Sport lawyers (4) and Human Resource Managers (4) continue to offer some, albeit limited employment opportunity.
The sport employment market continues to show strong growth in Australia, with the number of general positions vacant reaching a five-year high in 2000/2001, up a massive 31 percent from the previous year, a new report shows.
